QuestIsle in Malaysia

Maths and English practice that follows KSSR

QuestIsle turns workbook practice into an island adventure. In Malaysia, the Maths and English workbooks for ages 7 to 12 are mapped to the KSSR primary curriculum, Tahun 1 to Tahun 6: the topics in the order your child meets them at school, with ringgit in the money quests and British spelling throughout.

  • Tahun 1 to Tahun 6
  • Ages 7 to 12
  • RM and sen
  • British spelling
  • CEFR-levelled English

Three stops, six school years

Children in Malaysia start Tahun 1 in the year they turn seven. Each QuestIsle age band covers two school years, so the workbook your child opens matches the year they are in.

  1. Ages 7-8

    Tahun 1 and 2

    First steps

Numbers to 1 000, the first times tables, halves and quarters, sen and ringgit, and English that is working towards CEFR A1 with phonics and picture-backed texts.

  2. Ages 9-10

    Tahun 3 and 4

    Building the toolkit

Numbers to 100 000, fractions, decimals and the first percentages, coordinates and ratio, and English that moves past phonics into grammar, simple texts and sentence writing.

  3. Ages 11-12

    Tahun 5 and 6

    Bringing it together

Numbers to a million, fraction and percentage problems, ratio, averages and money in the real world, and English at about CEFR A2 with guided stories, letters and longer texts.

Math Mountain

Matematik, Tahun by Tahun

KSSR Matematik is a spiral: the same strands come back each year at greater depth. Math Mountain climbs the same way, and each ledge is checked against the DSKP content and learning standards for that year.

Ages 7-8

Tahun 1 and 2

Math Mountain: Goat Trail

Tahun 1 pupils already meet repeated addition as the start of multiplication, and Tahun 2 covers all the basic multiplication and division facts, so the times tables start earlier here than in many countries.

What school teaches

  • Whole numbers to 100, then to 1 000, with place value and rounding
  • Adding and subtracting within 100, then the basic × and ÷ facts
  • Fractions 1/2 and 1/4, then proper fractions and decimal tenths
  • Sen and ringgit: coins and notes to RM10, then RM100, saving and spending
  • Time to the hour, half hour and quarter hour, then hours and minutes
  • Length, mass and volume of liquid; 2-D and 3-D shapes; tally charts and pictographs

What your child practises

  • Place value and rounding to the nearest ten and hundred
  • Repeated addition growing into the 2, 5 and 10 times tables
  • Halves and quarters of shapes and of sets, then decimal tenths
  • Counting coins and giving change in sen and RM; multiplying and dividing amounts of money
  • Reading a clock face in hours, half hours and minutes
  • Measuring in cm, m, kg and litres; naming shapes; reading pictographs

Ages 9-10

Tahun 3 and 4

Math Mountain: Pine Ridge

KSSR brings percentages, coordinates and ratio in at Tahun 3 and 4, earlier than most curricula. Pine Ridge introduces them alongside fractions and decimals so nothing waits until Tahun 5.

What school teaches

  • Numbers to 10 000, then 100 000, with all four operations
  • Equivalent fractions, mixed numbers and decimals to three places
  • Percentages and the link between fractions, decimals and percent
  • Money to RM100 000, budgets, needs and wants, ways to pay
  • Angles, parallel and perpendicular lines, perimeter, area and the volume of cuboids
  • Coordinates in the first quadrant, ratio from 1:1 to 1:10, bar charts and pie charts

What your child practises

  • All times tables, then long multiplication
  • Column methods for adding, subtracting and multiplying
  • Fractions, decimals and simple percentages side by side
  • Ratio from 1:1 to 1:10 and the unitary method
  • Budgets, needs and wants, and ways to pay
  • Area and perimeter of rectangles and compound shapes; volume of cuboids
  • Reading and plotting points in the first quadrant
  • Bar charts, pictographs and pie charts

Ages 11-12

Tahun 5 and 6

Math Mountain: The Summit

Tahun 6 now ends with school-based classroom assessment (PBD) rather than an exam. The Summit practises the same multi-step problems, and the Parent Dashboard shows accuracy by topic so you can see where another go is needed.

What school teaches

  • Numbers to 1 000 000 and seven-digit numbers; prime numbers; mixed operations with brackets
  • Multiplying and dividing fractions; percentages above 100%
  • Savings and interest, profit and loss, discount and service tax
  • Ratio and proportion; distance between points on a grid
  • Polygons and their angles; surface area and volume
  • Mode, median, mean and range; likelihood

What your child practises

  • Seven-digit numbers, primes, long division and mixed operations with brackets
  • Fraction, decimal and percentage problems in one quest
  • Ratio and proportion; distance between points on a grid
  • Savings and interest, profit and loss, discount and service tax
  • Angles in polygons; surface area and volume; time zones
  • Mode, median, mean and range; pie charts; likelihood
  • Form 1 topics such as negatives and equations, in a labelled extension trail beyond Tahun 6
A quest from Goat Trail

Aiman buys a packet of nasi lemak for RM2.50 and a Milo for RM1.80. He pays with RM5. How much change does he get?

  • A RM0.70 (correct answer)
  • B RM1.30
  • C RM0.30
  • D RM4.30

Hint: Add the two prices first: RM2.50 + RM1.80 = RM4.30. Then count up from RM4.30 to RM5.00.

Reading Reef Spelling Springs Writing Woods

Bahasa Inggeris as a second language

In Malaysia, English is taught as a second language and levelled to the CEFR: working towards A1 in Tahun 1, A1 by Tahun 2 and about A2 by Tahun 6. Reading Reef, Spelling Springs and Writing Woods follow that pace, with phonics in the early years, grammar named from Tahun 3 and British spelling throughout.

Ages 7-8

Tahun 1 and 2

Coral Garden · Bubbling Pools · Mossy Hollow

Every instruction is read aloud, so a child who is still learning to read English can play on their own.

What school teaches

  • Working towards CEFR A1 by the end of Tahun 2
  • Phonics: CVC and CCVC words in Tahun 1, CVCV and CCV words in Tahun 2
  • Very short texts of 20 to 30 words with picture support
  • Spelling familiar high-frequency words
  • Writing words and phrases, capital letters for names, joining ideas with "and"
  • Listening, speaking and Language Arts: rhymes, chants and stories

What your child practises

  • Letter sounds, blending and segmenting, read aloud in every quest
  • Short picture-backed stories with who, what and where questions
  • High-frequency words built letter by letter
  • Sentences with a capital letter and a full stop
  • Words for home, school, food and family
  • Rhymes, chants and short listening quests

Ages 9-10

Tahun 3 and 4

Kelp Forest · Steam Vents · Old Oak

Malaysian English stops teaching phonics after Tahun 2 and starts an explicit grammar module in Tahun 3. Our 9-10 maps make the same turn.

What school teaches

  • CEFR A1 texts in Tahun 3, moving towards A2
  • Reading short simple texts and guessing words from pictures and the topic
  • A grammar module from Tahun 3: nouns, verbs, adjectives and tenses named for the first time
  • Simple sentences with full stops and question marks; cursive handwriting
  • Spelling most high-frequency words by Tahun 4
  • Using a simple monolingual dictionary

What your child practises

  • Main idea and simple inference in short texts
  • Nouns, verbs, adjectives and tenses, named and sorted
  • Question and exclamation marks; past and present tense
  • Word families and common exception words
  • Dictionary-style word meanings in context
  • Listening quests on short everyday texts
  • Beginning, middle and end of a short story

Ages 11-12

  • Prefixes, suffixes and the -tion and -sion endings
  • Formal and informal English
  • Listening and speaking quests for everyday situations
  • Timed dictation of sentences

How we follow the KSSR

A workbook is only useful if it practises what the teacher taught this week. So we build each map from the ministry's own documents, year by year, and keep the Malaysian details in: the money, the words and the order of topics.

The documents we work from

  • DSKP Matematik, Tahun 1 to 6The Dokumen Standard Kurikulum dan Pentaksiran content and learning standards for each year, plus the 2025 Dokumen Penjajaran for Tahap I.
  • DSKP Bahasa Inggeris SKThe CEFR-aligned English standards for Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing and Language Arts.
  • KSSR Semakan 2017 frameworkThe spiral design that brings each strand back every year at greater depth, and the performance levels used in PBD.
  • We start from the DSKP

Every Math Mountain stage for Tahun 1 to 6 is checked against the DSKP content and learning standards, topic by topic. Where KSSR places something in a different year from other countries, we follow KSSR.

  • One map, two school years

Goat Trail is Tahun 1 and 2, Pine Ridge is Tahun 3 and 4, The Summit is Tahun 5 and 6. A child in Tahun 3 starts Pine Ridge at the first stage and meets Tahun 4 topics as the year goes on.

  • Ringgit and sen

Money quests use RM and sen, with the coins and notes a Malaysian child handles, and prices from the kedai runcit and the school canteen rather than a pound shop.

  • British spelling and Malaysian terms

Colour, metre and litre. Volume of liquid, pictograph and unknown, as the DSKP says them. We avoid labels such as "tricky words" and "magic e" that Malaysian classrooms do not use.

  • English levelled to the CEFR

Malaysian English runs from working towards A1 in Tahun 1 to about A2 by Tahun 6, so phonics stays in the early years and grammar labels wait until Tahun 3, as they do at school.

  • Re-checked when the ministry moves

When a document changes, including the new KP2027 curriculum arriving for Tahun 1 in 2027, we review the affected maps and move stages where the syllabus has moved.

Words your child hears at school

Where Malaysian classrooms use a different word from a British or American workbook, we use the Malaysian one.

RM and sen
One ringgit is 100 sen. Prices are written RM8.50, never with a dollar sign or pence.
Tahun and Tahap
Tahun 1 to 6 are the primary years. Tahap I is Tahun 1 to 3 under KSSR; KP2027 regroups them into three Tahap of two years each.
Tahap Penguasaan
The six performance levels used in PBD classroom assessment. The Parent Dashboard shows accuracy by topic so you can see the same picture at home.
Volume of liquid
Isi padu cecair, rather than "capacity". Mass (jisim) rather than weight.
Pictograph
The DSKP word for a picture chart, rather than "pictogram". Pie charts arrive in Tahun 3.
Unknown
Anu: a letter standing for a missing number, from Tahun 4. Full algebra waits for Form 1.

Questions parents in Malaysia ask

Which workbook should my child start on?

Pick the band for their school year: Tahun 1 and 2 are the 7-8 maps, Tahun 3 and 4 the 9-10 maps, Tahun 5 and 6 the 11-12 maps. A child who finds the first stages hard can step back one map, and switching never loses progress or stars.

Is QuestIsle available in Bahasa Melayu?

Not yet. Questions, hints and instructions are in English today. The maths topics follow KSSR whichever language your child's school teaches in.

Does it prepare my child for UPSR?

UPSR no longer exists. Tahun 6 now ends with school-based classroom assessment (PBD) using performance levels 1 to 6. QuestIsle gives the daily practice behind those levels, and the Parent Dashboard shows accuracy by topic so you can see which skills need another go.

My child is at a SJKC, SJKT or DLP school. Does it still fit?

Yes. The KSSR Matematik topics are the same in national, Chinese and Tamil schools and in Dual Language Programme classes; only the language of instruction differs. English follows the same DSKP everywhere.

What about the new curriculum in 2027?

KP2027 reaches Tahun 1 in 2027 and Tahun 2 in 2028, while Tahun 3 to 6 stay on KSSR Semakan 2017 for now. We will update the Tahun 1 and 2 maps as the ministry publishes the new standards.

Can I pay in ringgit?

Yes. Workbook packs are bought through the App Store or Google Play in your local currency, with no extra charges inside the game.

More in the general FAQ. Schools can read about school packages, and families elsewhere can see QuestIsle in Singapore.
